Basseterre, St. Kitts (Public Infrastructure News) – An unexpected asphalt collapse along the Bay Road near Thibou Avenue in Irish Town on Monday, October 12, 2026, has prompted authorities to close the roadway, restricting public access while engineers conduct site evaluations to determine its cause and develop and implement a repair plan.
By Monday afternoon, engineers in the Public Works Department had completed their initial assessments and authorities have stated that reconstruction and repair work will begin on Tuesday (October 13, 2026).
The sidewalk in the area was previously undermined on October 20, 2025, prompting the Public Works Department to undertake repairs. Those repairs were completed last year.
Monday’s collapse has triggered an urgent response by the department, with officials maintaining that public safety remains the department’s number one priority.
Public Infrastructure News will provide updates as the situation develops.
