Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – Roads around the island are receiving due care and attention thanks to the hardworking men and women at the Public Works Department in the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, and Domestic Transport.
Over the past several weeks, PWD’s Roads and Drains Division has tackled potholes, drainage issues, overgrown shrubs, retaining walls, and even a collapsed sidewalk as part of its continuous drive to ensure that such infrastructure is fit for purpose.
Earlier this week, the team tackled Infirmary Road in Basseterre. MoPIEUDT NEWS caught up with them on the tail end of their rolling newly laid asphalt, symbolically solidifying the PWD’s commitment to restoring aged roadways to their previous glory – an act that the Department hopes the community will cherish.

In addition to its ongoing work, the PWD is also calling on the public to facilitate the maintenance of roadways across the island – a sign that the upkeep of the island’s infrastructure is a metaphorical two-way street requiring cooperation between the Department and the general public.
In recent months, the Department has been focussing on reducing and preventing road damage caused by heavy equipment and the spillage of construction materials.
In a public notice last issued on November 21, 2025, the PWD implored the general public to report observations of road damage and obstructions. The notice also cites the Roads Act, Cap. 15.05 which sets out the penalties for contravening the Act – inclusions that the Department hopes would operate as deterrents to potential offenders.
The Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, and Domestic Transport continues to invest monetarily and physically in improving the island’s infrastructure for individuals, businesses and the communities that comprise them, and safeguarding such investments remains a priority for the Public Works Department.
