Basseterre, Saint Kitts (Public Infrastructure News) – Following drilling activities that began in July 2023, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities has announced the handover of the new well in Cabbage Tree, Cayon, by contractor BEAD St. Kitts Ltd. The handover is scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024, at 8:30 a.m.
The St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) expressed gratitude to BEAD St. Kitts Ltd for its innovative use of modern geophysical exploration techniques, stating that BEAD succeeded where other companies which previously attempted to drill high-production wells in Cayon and Keys had not.
Officials say the new well has a safe yield of approximately 436,000 imperial gallons per day, exceeding the estimated daily water demand of the 2,500 residents of Cayon and Keys by more than 100,000 gallons.
Officials also confirm that the water quality has been tested by overseas accredited laboratories and the Bureau of Standards Multipurpose Laboratory in Saint Kitts. By their reports, the water from the new source satisfies the World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Water Guidelines.
The Ministry of Public Infrastructure remains committed to increasing the potable water supply for residents around the island by identifying additional groundwater sources, augmenting supply through investments in desalination, and increasing the water storage capacity.
