PWD Responds to Question on Signage and Line Markings on Roads

Date:

Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – At the joint press conference for the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities and Domestic Transport and the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology, and Post, on June 5, 2025, the leadership of the Public Works Department (PWD) responded to a question by moderator Eboni Brandon about road markings on newly paved roads.

Left to Right – PWD Deputy Director Xia-Xiang Claxton, Roads and Drains Division Head Zekey Hazel, and Quarry Manager Jermaine Lake

PWD Roads & Drains Division Head Zekey Hazel distinguished between the treatment of asphalt and concrete roads. Mr. Hazel said that while his division does not mark newly constructed concrete roads with lines typically seen on asphalt roads, it does undertake to cut a line down their centers to demarcate lanes for drivers.

In a response that initially focussed on newly asphalt roads, PWD Deputy Director Xia-Xiang Claxton stated:

“When it comes to new construction, line marking and road signage [are]… always included in the contract. […] You can rest assured that we will have line markings on our new roads.”

Turning her attention to existing roads, Ms. Claxton said that such roads receive line markings through the PWD’s collaboration with the Traffic Department.

Posed at a time when sensitivities remain high following multiple serious road accidents within the previous 12 months, the question elicited the importance of the PWD and its collaboration with other departments to ensure that the island’s roadways remain safe and usable.
