Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – Electricity service disconnections for customers with outstanding bills might soon be outmoded by a prepaid metering system that the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) has in its pipeline.
Pearl Williams, SKELEC’s Finance and Administration Manager, shared the development on June 5, 2025, at the press conference organized by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities, and Domestic Transport, and the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology and Post

Williams stated that the Energy and Utilities Minister, Hon. Konris Maynard, has been supportive of the project.
“The Minister is always keen on ensuring that all our customers remain connected.”

Mrs. Williams explained:
“With the prepaid system […] there will be no need for persons to be disconnected. [If] you are on the regular bill and you become disconnected, you can immediately become connected on prepaid. […] You will have to pay before you use […] but it wouldn’t matter that you have arrears because we will work it out in such a way that, while you are paying and using, you will be paying something towards the balance that you have.”

The change will inevitably be welcomed by customers who would typically be subject to disconnection for unpaid bills in the absence of an operating agreement for payment with the company. For all customers, this development is an example of SKELEC’s invitation to cooperate with the company to ensure continuous access to this vital service.
