The St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) is pleased to announce the start of a semi-airborne geophysical drone survey designed to identify new groundwater sources across the island. The survey officially began on Thursday, May 22, 2025, and will continue in a counter-clockwise direction through various communities in the coming weeks.

This initiative is part of the Government’s strategic efforts to secure a more reliable and sustainable water supply for all residents. By using advanced drone technology along with ground-based electrodes, the project aims to locate underground aquifers and identify optimal sites for future well development.
The survey is being carried out in collaboration with key technical partners:
- Dr. Johannes B. Stoll, Managing Director of Mobile Geophysical Technologies GmbH (contractor)
- Dr. Roland “Skip” Hoag, President of Bear Rock Consulting Inc. (consultant)
- Mr. Regiwell Francis, Owner of St. Kitts Marine Works (local subcontractor)
Dr. Hoag explained, “The purpose of the drone and this programme is to identify aquifers and specifically drill sites where we can develop additional groundwater for Saint Kitts. The drone flies in parallel paths about 50 meters apart and 50 meters above the ground, collecting data that is used to map resistivity in the soil. This allows us to accurately locate groundwater.”

As part of the process, electrodes will be installed in the ground to transmit electrical current for data collection. These areas will be clearly marked with safety signage and warning tape. The public is kindly asked not to interfere with the equipment, as high-voltage current may be present. Residents may also notice low-flying drones carrying instruments. These are part of the standard operations and pose no safety risk.
Minister of Public Infrastructure and Water, Hon. Konris Maynard, welcomed the project, stating, “We are excited that this project will lead to the development of new wells, especially in areas outside of Basseterre. We are also undertaking a major development of a desalination plant in Basseterre that will produce two million gallons of water per day. The Cayon well is already delivering much-needed water to that region, but we recognize the need to expand development to other areas as well.”
The Minister further added, “This investment represents a major milestone in the water sector in the history of Saint Kitts and Nevis. I would like to thank the Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, for the tremendous support that has brought us to this point.”
The WSD will provide regular updates on the areas being surveyed to keep the public informed. We thank you for your continued support and cooperation as we work to improve the nation’s water security.
