Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – Speaking on day 3 of the National Budget Address on December 18, 2025, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy & Utilities, and Domestic Transport, Hon. Konris Maynard, shared that the full commissioning of the Basseterre Desalination Plant (BDP) will improve national water service coverage from less than 25% to more than 70% nationally.
The statement comes as the island waits patiently for a shift in the water supply deficit following approximately one decade of water shortage issues due to adverse climatic changes.
Minister Maynard attributed the projected increase in coverage to the capacity of the new BDP, which stands at 2 million gallons per day, and also to new pipeline interconnections on the islandwide water distribution network which will facilitate redirection of water around the island.
He also noted the invaluable contributions of the BDP’s contractor, Gerry Moise, General Manager of Royal Utilities Ltd. and the management and staff of the St. Kitts Water Services Department.
Day 3 of the 2026 Budget Address continues.
