Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – Amid the usual hustle and bustle that define the transition from the weekend to the start of the work week, on Monday, August 25, 2025, the staff at the secretariat of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy & Utilities, and Domestic Transport began the week in a very unusual way. While workers in other places upheld their normal dress code, the secretariat transported its workers to a time when the institution of slavery ruled the land by asking its workers to dress like plantation workers in a post-emancipation era.
The task required a level of creativity from the employees, several of whom embraced the challenge as an opportunity to celebrate with each other, build ties, and infuse a bit of fun with great historical significance into their daily routine.

The event’s execution serves to remind us of our linkages to a past defined by the collective pain and sorrow of our ancestors, but also one defined by their indomitable will to secure the freedom and dignity that we continue to enjoy today.
Naevisia Scarborough, the Personal Assistant of the Hon. Minister Konris Maynard, summarized the event’s aim and significance in a brief statement. She also explained how the event satisfies the secretariat’s monthly observance of Spirit Week – where staff are separated into teams (houses) to compete for points by completing specific tasks.
Spirt Week continues with a host of other activities, including a sip and paint workshop on Friday, August 29, 2025.
