Basseterre, St. Kitts – The Government of St. Kitts & Nevis hosted the third OECS Energy Ministers Meeting on February 4-5, 2025 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, Frigate Bay.
The meeting, under the theme, “Sustainable Energy: Creating Opportunities for Reinventing the Economy of the OECS” focused on advancing sustainable energy development across the region, a critical issue for small island developing states in the Caribbean.
The incoming Chair, Honorable Minister Konris Maynard described ‘The Basseterre Declaration of the OECS Decade of Action for Sustainable Energy Development’ as an “important outcome of the Council of Ministers Meeting”. This declaration highlights the strategic direction for sustainable energy development in the region over the next decade, emphasizing the need for bold action and collaboration among member states.
Minister Maynard emphasized the significance of utilizing our substantial natural resources which will decrease the need for fossil fuel importation. He stated that “Sustainable energy is no longer simply a goal. It is a pathway to unlocking new economic opportunities, driving innovation and building resilience for our small island developing states.”
